Job Description

Step into a senior leadership role where you’ll shape some of the most complex and high-profile mechanical projects in the San Diego commercial market. As Senior Mechanical Project Manager – Commercial Construction, you’ll take full ownership of large HVAC, plumbing, piping, and integrated mechanical systems from preconstruction through closeout, driving performance, safety, and quality. This is a key position within a respected Southern California mechanical contractor known for delivering technically demanding, design-driven projects.

About the Role:

As Senior Mechanical Project Manager – Commercial Construction, you will lead the full project lifecycle for large, complex commercial mechanical construction projects, ensuring they are delivered safely, on time, and within budget. You will be responsible for aligning project strategy, design coordination, and field execution, while maintaining strong relationships with owners, general contractors, and design partners. Your leadership will directly impact project profitability, client satisfaction, and the development of high-performing project teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead end-to-end management of large mechanical construction projects from preconstruction, estimating support, and design coordination through commissioning and final closeout.
  • Direct design-build and design-assist efforts, coordinating closely with clients, engineers, BIM teams, and subcontractors to optimise system performance and constructability.
  • Develop, manage, and track detailed project budgets, forecasts, and cost reports, ensuring financial performance targets are met or exceeded.
  • Create and maintain project schedules, integrating construction planning, manpower loading, procurement activities, and critical path milestones.
  • Oversee field operations, including supervision of mechanical installation activities, productivity, safety compliance, quality control, and system coordination with other trades.
  • Manage procurement of equipment and materials, including vendor selection, purchase orders, delivery logistics, and alignment with schedule and budget requirements.
  • Administer project documentation, including RFIs, submittals, change orders, contracts, progress billings, and closeout packages.
  • Lead and mentor Project Managers, Project Engineers, and other team members, providing direction, performance feedback, and professional development.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with owners, general contractors, design teams, vendors, and trade partners to support repeat business and collaborative project delivery.
  • Identify project risks related to design, schedule, cost, and field execution, and implement proactive mitigation strategies to protect project outcomes.

Key Requirements:

  • Minimum 10 years of project management experience with a commercial mechanical contractor or closely related construction firm.
  • Proven experience managing large HVAC, plumbing, piping, or full mechanical construction projects in commercial or industrial environments.
  • Demonstrated success delivering mechanical contracts in the approximate range of $15M to $200M.
  • At least five years of experience on industrial or technically complex projects (e.g., healthcare, data centers, labs, advanced manufacturing, or similar).
  • At least five years of preconstruction, design-build, or design-assist project experience.
  • Strong command of mechanical construction operations, including project financials, scheduling, procurement, and change-order management.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead multiple project teams simultaneously in a fast-paced construction environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interface effectively with executives, clients, engineers, field personnel, and trade partners.
  • Proven leadership track record, including team oversight, performance management, and accountability for project results.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience delivering projects in one or more of the following markets: healthcare/hospitals, data centers/mission-critical, laboratories/clean rooms, higher education, semiconductor/advanced manufacturing, or industrial facilities.
  • Hands-on experience with BIM coordination processes and collaboration with virtual design teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Project, Viewpoint, and advanced use of Microsoft Office for reporting and analysis.
  • Prior responsibility for managing multiple concurrent large projects and direct reports.
  • Background in sustainable construction, energy-efficient mechanical systems, or complex industrial systems.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline (required or strongly preferred, depending on experience).
  • Professional certifications such as PMP, CCM, PE (Mechanical), or equivalent are advantageous.
  • OSHA 30 or equivalent construction safety training preferred.
  • Ongoing professional development in project management, mechanical systems, or construction leadership is highly valued.
