Location: Drogheda 
Job Type: Full-Time | Temporary
Contract: Initial 3-month contract with the possibility of extension, subject to service requirements.
Hours: 35 hours per week
Salary: €46,827 - €72,356 (depending on verified previous public sector experience)

About the Role

We are seeking an Educational Welfare Officer (EWO) to promote regular school attendance and support children, young people and families experiencing barriers to education. Working as part of Education Support Services, you will collaborate with schools, parents and partner agencies to improve educational outcomes and ensure compliance with the Education (Welfare) Act 2000. This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated professional looking to make a meaningful impact within children's services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote regular school attendance and engagement among pupils, families and local communities.
  • Support schools in developing attendance strategies, codes of behaviour and positive school cultures.
  • Work directly with families to address attendance difficulties and re-engage children in education.
  • Track and support children who have disengaged from education and assist with their return to school.
  • Inspect school attendance records and ensure compliance with the Education (Welfare) Act 2000.
  • Liaise with schools, Home School Community Liaison (HSCL) Coordinators, School Completion Programme (SCP) staff and other child welfare agencies.
  • Prepare reports, maintain accurate case records and, where appropriate, initiate legal proceedings under the Education (Welfare) Act.
  • Support parents with school enrolment, suspension and expulsion matters.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary working and contribute to improving outcomes for children and families.
  • Travel throughout the designated area as required.

Essential Requirements

  • QQI Level 8 (or higher) qualification (or equivalent recognised in Ireland) in Health, Education, Social Sciences, Psychology, Arts/Humanities, Youth Work, Community Work or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years' paid front-line experience working directly with vulnerable or at-risk children and families, demonstrating meaningful engagement and positive outcomes.
  • Strong understanding of child welfare, safeguarding and educational welfare practice.
  • Excellent communication, report writing and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work independently while managing a varied caseload.
  • Full driving licence and access to transport, as the role involves regular travel.
