Day shifts are paid at €30–€36 per hour, reflecting the level of responsibility and specialist skills required.
About the Role:
You will provide holistic nursing care to patients requiring palliative and end-of-life support, ensuring comfort, dignity, and symptom control at all times. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will act as a key clinical resource for patients and their families, supporting informed decisions and care planning. Your role will help maintain high standards of clinical practice and continuity of care across a range of settings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver direct nursing care to palliative and end-of-life patients, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of individualised care plans.
- Manage complex symptoms such as pain, nausea, breathlessness, and agitation, using evidence-based interventions and escalation pathways.
- Provide emotional support and clear communication to patients and their families, facilitating advance care planning and end-of-life discussions where appropriate.
- Administer medications safely, including controlled drugs, and maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including GPs, specialist palliative care teams, and allied health professionals, to coordinate and review care.
- Monitor patient condition, recognise deterioration, and respond promptly in line with clinical protocols and patient wishes.
- Support a calm, respectful environment that upholds patient dignity, cultural preferences, and individual values at end of life.
Key Requirements:
- Current registration as an RGN with NMBI and eligibility to work in Ireland.
- Proven post-registration experience in acute, community, or hospice settings, including direct exposure to palliative or end-of-life care.
- Strong clinical assessment skills with the ability to manage complex and changing care needs.
- Demonstrated competence in medication management, including controlled drugs, and adherence to clinical guidelines.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to handle sensitive conversations with patients and families.
- Reliable, flexible approach to temporary shifts within 30–45 minutes of Mullingar.
Desirable Skills:
- Previous experience in a dedicated palliative care or hospice environment.
- Training or study in palliative care, symptom management, or end-of-life communication.
- Experience working within community or home-care settings.
Qualifications:
- Registered General Nurse (RGN) with active NMBI registration – required.
- Degree or Diploma in General Nursing – required.
- Additional courses or certification in palliative or end-of-life care – desirable.
