Job Description

Job Title: Basic Grade Medical Scientist - Blood Transfusion 
Department: Laboratory
Reports to: Chief Medical Scientist/Laboratory Manager

Purpose of Role

This role will require the ability to also work in Haematology, to be competent in performing laboratory tests and responsible for processing and authorising under the direction of the Chief Medical Scientist and Laboratory Manager.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain and enforce laboratory procedures.

• Implement best practices to optimize resources.

• Contribute to quality management and performance audits.

• Perform work to meet accreditation standards.

• Prioritize and manage testing workloads, including on-call duties.

• Assist with stock management and issue resolution.

• Participate in training, professional development, and team communication.

Health & Safety

• Adhere to safety procedures and assist in accident prevention.

Quality Management

• Participate in quality assurance and control programs.

• Follow professional codes of practice and standards.

Information Technology

• Support laboratory information systems and reporting.

Flexibility

• Adapt to changing service needs as required.

Person Specification

Qualifications:

• Degree in Biomedical Science or equivalent

• CORU Registration.

Experience:

• 1+ year in laboratory service training, with Blood Transfusion experience.

• Post-qualification experience and on-call rota participation are desirable.

Skills & Abilities:

• Strong communication and teamwork skills.

• Adaptability to change and evolving demands.

Knowledge & Understanding:

• Knowledge of laboratory services, quality control, and relevant legislation.

• Familiarity with lab information systems (desirable).
