Work pattern: Mon - Fri including occasional weekends
Hours: 35 hours per week

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform the appropriate duties of a Medical Scientist, under the guidance of the Laboratory Manager.
  • Participate in the running of the Department taking day to day responsibility for planning, prioritising and supervising the analytical work of a section in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Assist in the organisation and co-ordination of the Multidisciplinary Blood Science service.
  • Participate in developing the Multidisciplinary Blood Science service to meet the clinical needs of our patients and ensuring that the service is consistent with the mission, vision, values and strategic plan of the Hospital.
  • Perform PCR testing as required in a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Manage referral of a range of testing to multiple laboratories and input results where required into the laboratory information system.
  • Perform analytical testing appropriate to the hospital & multidisciplinary blood science service.
  • Perform all activities related to the receipt, analysis and reporting of laboratory specimens.
  • Ensure that all samples are processed in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Skills:

  • Demonstrate an in depth knowledge of laboratory medicine especially multidisciplinary Blood Science practice and procedures
  • Demonstrate evidence based clinical knowledge in making decisions regarding the Multidisciplinary Blood Science service
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the requirements of ISO15189
  • Demonstrate the ability to manage deadlines and effectively handle multiple tasks
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the importance of the patient/client at all times
  • Demonstrate leadership and management skills including the ability to work with multidisciplinary team members.
IT Duties:

  • Project implementation and on-going maintenance for the laboratory IT systems.
  • Effective management of data and records contained in both computer and non-computerised systems.
  • In accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998, maintain confidentiality of patient information at all times.
  • In conjunction with the Hospital/Group IT departments, ensure an effective and efficient laboratory information systems infrastructure.
  • Understand, embrace and utilise the IT structures that are been developed by Management to assist in ensuring that data is accurate and timely.

Requirements:

  • BSc Honours degree in Biomedical Science from University College Cork
  • CORU Registration is mandatory
  • Three years or more experience in multidisciplinary or blood sciences laboratory
  • Working knowledge of IT Systems in a Laboratory environment
  • 2 years' experience of operational involvement with a quality management system including document control.
  • Full Driver's license and own car is essential 
  • Must be a resident in Ireland and have the legal right to work in Ireland without restriction.
  • Willing to undergo Garda Vetting. 
  • International Police Clearance required (if lived outside of Ireland for more than 6 months after the age of 16).
