Job Description

Setting solid foundations for early years… be part of something truly amazing!

We have an incredible opportunity for a Founding Principal to help set up a brand-new nursery school in Nairobi. This exciting new venture offers career progression in a fantastic location with a great lifestyle. Known for its great climate, safaris and stunning national park, Nairobi also serves as the East African hub for business, with a vibrant and friendly culture and fantastic dining scene.

The purpose-built nursery school is about to enter construction and will cater for up to 120 young children, aged 6 months to 6 years. It is due to open in January 2027, although the Founding Principal will be required to start in August/September in preparation for opening. With good staff-to-children ratios (1:3 for younger years and 1:4 for older years) and brand-new facilities, this is a rare opportunity for the right candidate to really make their mark.

As Founding Principal, you will be responsible for getting the new school operational, which will include helping to set up the mixed curriculum (mainly Montessori and UK) and recruiting a strong and passionate team locally – from head teachers for each year group, to teachers and TAs. Once open, you will remain responsible for day-to-day management of the school.

A talented teacher and leader, you will have strong teaching experience with knowledge of the UK and Montessori curriculum.  Previous experience as a founding principal at another school would be advantageous, though not essential. You must be a strong and organised leader, able to understand and execute the school’s vision to offer an outstanding education to young children.

Benefits:

  • Competitive salary (£3,745 – £5,244 per month)
  • Free accommodation or allowance*
  • Free travel to/from Kenya*
  • Work permit
  • Profit share in the business
  • Potential free nursery places for young dependents
  • A dedicated consultant to support you through the application process.

Skills and requirements:

  • QTS (or relevant teaching licence)
  • A solid background in teaching Early Years
  • Knowledge of the UK and Montessori curriculum
  • Previous experience as a Founding Principal (advantageous)
  • DBS on the update service (or willing to apply)
  • An inspirational, driven and passionate leader
  • Available to start from August/September.

Teaching in Kenya is a fantastic opportunity and could be just the adventure you're waiting for. So, if you feel you have the relevant skills, experience and passion, we would love to hear from you.

At Red Lester we specialise in supporting international schools to find the right teachers across the primary, secondary, FE and SEN sectors. We offer teachers the opportunity to work in the most beautiful locations, supporting them from initial application right through to starting their new role and settling into life at their new school.

*Free accommodation and travel applies to candidates outside of Kenya. Conditions apply.
