The Infant Junior School and Camp Education (IJS&CE) has approximately 320 students between Foundation Stage 1 and Year 6. Teaching and learning follow the National Curriculum for England enhanced by local curriculum content.
The school is responsible for the provision of primary education for all children in the Falkland Islands, including those who live in remote locations. They have a main school site in the capital, Stanley, where the majority of our 320 children attend. Education for a small number of children who live in remote areas of the Falkland Islands is provided through two routes, firstly there are two satellite ‘settlement’ schools which are located on large sheep farms and secondly there is a travelling teacher service, which is a combined system of direct teaching and computer / telephone lessons.
The school is seeking to recruit a short-term Travelling Teacher to work with a small number of children on their school roll who live on a single-family sheep farm, in a rural area of the Falkland Islands. The setting is a large ranch style sheep farm on East Falkland, with gravel road access to the capital Stanley.
The travelling teacher travels to the farm in a 4x4 vehicle (provided for this purpose) and teaches the child or children (1-2 children) in a classroom setting on their farm. The classroom is in separate building next to the family farmhouse. This building also provides the self-catered accommodation for the teacher. It is well appointed, including a bedroom, kitchen, living space and a bathroom. The location has dedicated school telephone line and internet access. The teacher lives in the accommodation during the working week and there are opportunities at weekends and holidays for the teacher to travel to Stanley to restock their school supplies at the main school site and to enjoy their own social connections.
Working as a travelling teacher is a truly unique opportunity where a teacher can experience a different way of life and a different environment while working within a familiar curriculum, doing the best job in the world! The short-term nature of this opportunity will be suited to someone wishing to explore this corner of the world.
You will need to be practical, organised, resilient and adaptable with a sense for adventure and an understanding / appreciation / or an interest in finding out more about farming communities. Teaching in this setting allows you to create a bespoke, personalised learning plan for each child you work with, outside of the constraints of whole class teaching. The settings allow for opportunities for learning in the environment and making education truly relevant to each learner.
You will need to be able to teach successfully within Key Stage 2, self-sufficient, problem solvers and able to work successfully at a distance from the main school site. You will need to be in good health and feel comfortable driving 4 x 4 vehicles on gravel road.
