Job Description

Join a forward-thinking sustainability consultancy at the forefront of low-carbon building design and certification. This is a key opportunity for an experienced specialist to shape high-profile projects across commercial, residential and mixed-use sectors, driving measurable improvements in building performance and decarbonisation.

About the Role:

You will lead sustainability input across the project lifecycle, from early-stage strategy through to detailed assessment and certification, ensuring ambitious environmental targets are met and exceeded. Working closely with design teams, developers and occupiers, you will translate building physics insight and certification frameworks into practical, commercially viable solutions. Your work will directly influence project outcomes, supporting clients on their journey to net zero and enhancing the sustainability profile of the built environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage BREEAM New Construction and BREEAM Refurbishment & Fit-Out assessments from feasibility through to post-construction stages.
  • Deliver SKA assessments for fit-out projects, advising design and project teams on achieving target ratings and best practice outcomes.
  • Develop decarbonisation strategies for buildings and portfolios, including operational and embodied carbon reduction pathways.
  • Undertake building physics analysis to inform passive design, energy efficiency, fabric performance and comfort strategies.
  • Provide clear, actionable sustainability advice to clients and design teams, influencing decisions at concept, planning and detailed design stages.
  • Coordinate and prepare high-quality technical reports, sustainability statements and evidence packs for planning and certification submissions.
  • Mentor and support junior consultants, reviewing their work and contributing to the development of team capability and standards.
  • Stay abreast of emerging policy, guidance and industry trends in sustainability, net zero and building performance, and integrate these into project work.

Key Requirements:

  • Strong, demonstrable experience delivering BREEAM New Construction assessments on UK projects, including leading assessments to certification.
  • Proven track record with BREEAM Refurbishment & Fit-Out, including managing multiple projects and liaising with BRE as required.
  • Hands-on experience delivering SKA assessments for commercial or office fit-out schemes.
  • Solid understanding of building physics principles, including thermal performance, energy modelling inputs/outputs and comfort criteria.
  • Experience developing decarbonisation or net zero carbon strategies for buildings, including identification and evaluation of carbon reduction measures.
  • Ability to interpret and apply UK building regulations, planning policy and sustainability standards within project contexts.
  • Strong client-facing skills, with experience presenting technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to manage workload across multiple concurrent projects, meeting deadlines and quality expectations with minimal supervision.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with dynamic thermal modelling or energy modelling software to support building physics analysis.
  • Familiarity with embodied carbon assessment tools and methodologies (e.g. life cycle assessment for materials and structures).
  • Involvement in wider sustainability frameworks such as LEED, WELL, NABERS or net zero building certifications.
  • Experience working on large, complex or multi-phase developments with multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Contribution to internal sustainability initiatives, knowledge sharing or process improvement within a consultancy environment.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in a relevant discipline such as Building Services Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Sustainability, Architecture, or related field.
  • BREEAM Assessor or BREEAM AP status (New Construction and/or RFO) strongly preferred.
  • SKA accredited assessor status or willingness to obtain within an agreed timeframe.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body (e.g. CIBSE, IEMA, Energy Institute, RICS) is advantageous.
  • Evidence of ongoing CPD in sustainability, net zero carbon, and building performance.

If you are a senior sustainability professional ready to take ownership of impactful projects and deepen your expertise in certification, decarbonisation and building physics, we’d like to hear from you.
