Rail Project Director – Transportation Infrastructure

Location: Dublin, Cork, or Galway 
Hours: Monday to Friday, standard office hours
Salary & Benefits: c.€130,000 - €150,000, healthcare plan, pension scheme, professional development support (Engineers Ireland accredited), career progression within a global consultancy, and High Amount of Annual Leave

About the Role

Optimize Recruitment, working closely with our client, are seeking a Rail Project Director to join a leading global consultancy’s transportation division.
The successful candidate will oversee the delivery of large-scale, multi-disciplinary rail and transportation infrastructure projects across Ireland. This role will suit an experienced Chartered Engineer with a strong technical background in civil or transportation engineering, and proven experience leading design and delivery teams from concept through to construction.

This is a senior position offering hybrid working options and the opportunity to lead significant national programmes while developing future leaders within the business.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and direct multi-disciplinary transportation and rail infrastructure projects
  • Manage design teams and liaise with senior engineering management to ensure project success
  • Oversee commercial and contractual performance across major frameworks
  • Act as Project Director or Project Manager on key national railway schemes
  • Mentor and manage senior project managers and technical staff
  • Lead tender submissions and secure new project opportunities
  • Ensure technical excellence, quality assurance, and compliance with client standards
  • Foster long-term client relationships through collaboration and innovation

Requirements

  • Degree-qualified (Level 8/9) in Engineering or related discipline
  • Chartered Engineer status with Engineers Ireland or equivalent
  • 10+ years’ postgraduate experience, ideally within consultancy environments
  • Proven track record delivering multi-disciplinary infrastructure or rail projects
  • Strong understanding of contract management (Employer’s Representative or NEC Project Manager experience advantageous)
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
  • Ability to guide and motivate diverse technical teams
  • Full clean driving licence required
  • Irish/UK experience highly advantageous
