Senior Quantity Surveyor – Civils (Move into Commercial Manager role)
Location: Portlaoise (Office Based)
Hours: Full-Time, Permanent
Salary: €90,000 - €120,000+
Package: Vehicle, fuel card, pension, professional development support

About the Role

Optimize Recruitment, working closely with our client, are seeking a Senior Quantity Surveyor to take a lead role in major civils and infrastructure projects across the Midlands and Ireland.

The successful candidate will oversee the financial and contractual delivery of multiple projects, ensuring value optimisation, robust risk management, and effective cost control. This is a senior position offering clear progression towards Commercial Manager level.

The contractor operates with 100+ staff and a strong Quantity Surveying team already in place. Current and upcoming works include public realm schemes, ESB and utilities infrastructure, roadworks, and public developments. This position offers a balance of site and office-based responsibilities, with a wide variety of projects to oversee.

The role will commence as a Senior QS, but very strong potential for the incumbent to move into a Commercial Manager role in time, or can start the role as a Commercial Manager, is desired.

Responsibilities

  • Lead commercial strategy and delivery for assigned civil projects
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and cost control across project lifecycles
  • Manage preparation and agreement of valuations, variations, and final accounts
  • Produce accurate cost/value reconciliation reports with risk and opportunity analysis
  • Support and mentor junior Quantity Surveyors in their career development
  • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations and company procedures
  • Provide commercial input during pre-construction and tendering phases
  • Collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, and design teams
  • Conduct feasibility studies and advise on project viability
  • Represent the company in contract negotiations and stakeholder discussions

Requirements

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Economics, or related discipline
  • 7+ years’ experience in a Senior QS role, ideally within civils or infrastructure projects. Experience on Irish/UK Civils Projects is required. 
  • Chartered or pursuing chartership (SCSI, RICS, CIOB, or equivalent)
  • Strong knowledge of contract administration, CVR, and dispute resolution
  • Proven track record managing projects over €5M in value
  • Skilled in cost reporting, claims preparation, and contractual negotiation
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
