Job Description

MAT Recruitment is supporting a values-led secondary school to appoint a committed and experienced Head of Year. This role is an immediate start.

This is an important pastoral leadership role for someone who is passionate about helping young people overcome barriers, achieve their potential and feel safe, supported and ready to learn.

The role

As Head of Year, you will lead the pastoral support for a designated year group, working closely with students, families, colleagues and external agencies to promote excellent attendance, punctuality, behaviour, wellbeing and achievement.

You will be a visible and trusted presence across the school, using data, strong relationships and timely intervention to ensure every student receives the right support.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and coordinating the pastoral provision for a year group.
  • Monitoring attendance, punctuality, behaviour and academic progress, identifying students requiring additional support.
  • Developing and reviewing individual support plans and interventions for students facing barriers to learning.
  • Building positive, professional relationships with parents and carers, including regular communication and meetings where needed.
  • Supporting students returning following absence, exclusion, illness or other challenges.
  • Maintaining accurate pastoral, safeguarding and behaviour records using the school’s management information system.
  • Working closely with form tutors, senior leaders, teaching staff and external agencies to secure the best outcomes for students.
  • Leading year-team meetings, supporting tutor development and quality-assuring tutor time provision.
  • Promoting positive behaviour, rewards, student voice, enrichment and year-group identity.
  • Supporting transition, parents’ evenings, open events, assemblies, trips and the wider life of the school.
  • Providing occasional classroom cover, registration, invigilation or student supervision where required.

The ideal candidate

You will have experience of working with young people in an education setting, ideally within a pastoral role. You will be calm, resilient and highly organised, with the ability to manage sensitive situations with professionalism, empathy and discretion.

You will also have:

  • GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above.
  • Experience providing pastoral support in a school or education setting.
  • A strong understanding of attendance, behaviour and safeguarding processes.
  • Confidence interpreting student data and using it to plan effective interventions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with students, families, colleagues and external partners.
  • A proactive approach, sound judgement and the ability to work independently under pressure.
  • A clear commitment to equality, diversity, safeguarding and the personal development of young people.
  • Respect for, and willingness to support, the school’s faith-based ethos and values.

This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference to the experience and outcomes of a whole year group.

MAT Recruitment is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All appointments are subject to relevant pre-employment checks, including an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
