About the Role: In this role, you will plan and deliver engaging English lessons across Key Stages, ensuring all students are challenged and supported to achieve their potential. You will play a key part in raising attainment, contributing to curriculum development, and maintaining a positive, purposeful classroom environment. Your work will directly influence student progress, literacy standards, and wider whole-school priorities.
Key Responsibilities: * Plan and deliver high-quality English lessons aligned with the school’s curriculum and exam specifications.
* Implement effective classroom management strategies to maintain a focused, respectful learning environment.
* Differentiate lessons and resources to meet the needs of mixed-ability groups, including SEND and EAL learners.
* Use a range of assessment methods to monitor progress, track attainment, and inform future planning.
* Provide timely, constructive feedback to students to support their academic development and literacy skills.
* Integrate educational technology into teaching to enhance engagement, independent learning, and assessment.
* Contribute to the ongoing review and development of the English curriculum and schemes of work.
* Participate in departmental meetings, moderation activities, and whole-school initiatives related to teaching and learning.
Key Requirements: * Proven experience teaching English within a secondary school setting in the UK.
* Strong classroom management skills with the ability to establish clear routines and high expectations.
* Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver differentiated lessons for diverse learner needs.
* Confident in designing and using formative and summative assessments to drive pupil progress.
* Skilled in providing clear, actionable feedback that supports student improvement.
* Competent user of educational technology (e.g. interactive whiteboards, learning platforms, online assessment tools).
* Strong subject knowledge in English language and literature across relevant Key Stages.
* Excellent communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Desirable Skills: * Experience teaching GCSE English and, where applicable, A-Level English.
* Familiarity with current UK educational frameworks, inspection criteria, and literacy initiatives.
* Experience contributing to curriculum development or leading specific units or projects.
* Ability to support extracurricular activities related to English, such as reading clubs or drama.
Qualifications: * Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent recognised UK teaching qualification in Secondary Education.
* Degree in English or a closely related subject.
* Evidence of ongoing professional development in teaching, assessment, or educational technology (preferred).
