Job Description

Lead financial excellence across multiple academies and drive meaningful educational impact in this senior finance leadership role.

MAT Recruitment is working on behalf of a reputable and well-established multi-academy trust to appoint an experienced Accountant to join their central finance team. This is a key leadership role within the Trust's finance function, offering the opportunity to influence financial governance, compliance and strategic decision-making across multiple academies.

Please note: you must have education experience for this role

Reporting directly to the Chief Finance Officer, the Accountant will have responsibility for overseeing the central accounting function, ensuring robust financial controls, accurate reporting and strong compliance with the Academies Financial Handbook and ESFA requirements. This role plays a critical part in supporting effective financial stewardship and minimising risk across the organisation.

The role

The successful candidate will lead on the production of consolidated monthly management accounts, annual reports and statutory returns, while maintaining effective internal controls and overseeing the Trust's accounting systems and processes. You will work closely with senior leaders and key stakeholders across the Trust, providing high-quality financial advice and supporting sound decision-making.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Support Headteachers with budgeting, forecasting and in-year planning
  • Produce monthly management accounts and clear financial reports
  • Help manage financial risk, compliance and governance across the Trust
  • Contribute to year-end accounts and statutory returns
  • Lead and support central finance colleagues

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people is an essential responsibility within this role.

The ideal candidate

We are seeking a finance professional who brings strong technical expertise alongside the ability to lead, influence and collaborate.

You will ideally have:

  • Has strong financial and accounting skills with great attention to detail
  • Is confident working with senior leaders
  • Qualified accountant (ACCA/ACA/CIMA or equivalent)
  • Is organised, proactive and collaborative
