Job Description

Lead a High-Impact Department as a Head of English in Accrington!

Are you ready to drive departmental excellence and inspire colleagues and learners alike? MAT Recruitment is seeking a confident and effective Head of English for a permanent role in a well-regarded school in , starting from January or sooner!

This is a leadership position with significant responsibility for shaping the English curriculum, guiding a team of teachers, and ensuring every student reaches their full potential. You will be a key member of the middle leadership team, influencing policy and practice at a whole-school level.

We’re Looking For Someone Who:

  • Holds QTS and has substantial teaching experience in English
  • Has a track record of improving outcomes and leading others successfully.
  • Understands curriculum planning, progress tracking, and intervention strategies.
  • Can lead with vision, build a strong team ethos, and ensure consistency across classrooms.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Lead and inspire the English department to deliver consistently high-quality teaching and outstanding student outcomes across KS3–KS5.

  • Develop and implement a well-sequenced, ambitious curriculum that fosters a love of literature, language, and learning.

  • Monitor and evaluate teaching, learning, and assessment to ensure continuous improvement.

  • Use data analysis to track pupil progress, identify trends, and drive targeted interventions for improvement.

  • Support, coach, and develop members of the English team through effective line management and professional development.

  • Oversee curriculum planning, assessment strategies, and moderation processes in line with school and exam board requirements.

  • Lead departmental meetings and contribute to whole-school development priorities.

  • Manage departmental resources and budgets effectively to enhance teaching and learning.
