Job Description

The Enrolled Nurse is responsible for residents’ care management through promoting, maintaining and restoring residents’ holistic health and maximising their functional abilities.  This is achieved by performing clinical tasks, supervising the care team, maintaining quality standards, and proactive stakeholder management.  The enrolled nurse performs all care activities with compassion and respect under the direct/indirect supervision of a Registered Nurse.  Activities are executed in line with policies & procedures.

Clinical Tasks                                          

  • Conducts patient rounds (i.e. monitors and records patient condition and information).
  • Administers medication, injections and intraveneous therapy as instructed and with relevant supervision.
  • Reviews reports (e.g. rounds report, bowel action report) to identify and report changes/concerns related to patient condition and reacts accordingly.  
  • Perform specialised care tasks as needed, according to procedure (i.e. knows how to and when to), and with appropriate recording keeping. This includes catheter care, eye care, wound care etc.                                                                                          
  • Performs and records vital observations and acts accordingly.                       
  • Reacts to, reports, and follows up on incidents with the appropriate discretion.               
  • Controls medication/equipment stock as delegated.                       
  • Assists with patient assessments to inform the care plan.                       
  • Assists with doctor's rounds and procedures as required.                       
  • Assists, as needed, to arrange patient admission, discharge, outings and appointments.
  • In the absence of a Registered Nurse, provides advice and information to residents and their families and collaborates constructively with the multi-disciplinary team.

Team Supervision

  • Distributes daily delegation to team members and ensure team members sign attendance registe
  • Facilitates shift handover to ensure all relevant information is shared and noted.
  • Oversees and checks completion of tasks (i.e. oversees execution of caregiver tasks and signs off on completion).
  • Provides induction for new team members (i.e. ensures exposure to all relevant policies & procedures; go through the job profile). 
  • Completes and submits allocated team members' performance assessments thoroughly and fairly
  • Identifies team members' training needs and provide inservice training and coaching.
  • Liaises with the department manager regarding team performance and reports any variance from the quality standard.               
  • Acts with authority to ensure compliance with policies, procedures and quality standards.
  • Encourages a participative style and an environment of continuous improvement.               

Compliance, Health and Safety

  • Monitors and enforces compliance with internal and external standards and codes of conduct.
  • Complies with internal and external policies, procedures, standards and codes of conduct.
  • Takes responsibility to ensure a safe environment for all stakeholders (e.g. self, team, residents).
  • Ensures that a good standard of housekeeping is maintained in the work area.
  • Accurately and timeously adresses and reports compliance concerns and/or accidents.

Professional Engagement                                                                                             

  • Interacts with all stakeholders (co-workers, managers, residents, resident 
  • Constructively participates in training & similar activities as required. 
  • Acts as a responsible, reliable team member (e.g. willing to assist, responds constructively to corections, reports deviations from standards).               
  • Executes instructions in a respectful, prompt, efficient, compliant manner.                                   
Requirements:
  • Active registration with the South African Nursing Council as an Enrolled Nurse.
  • Compliance with the South African Nursing Council code for an Enrolled Nurse and all applicable health care legislation
  • Work experience: completion of practical experience in a frail care, geriatric or psychiatric setting will be advantageous.
  • Skills and attributes: Excellent communication and leadership, working independently and as part of a team, excellent organizing and documentation skills. 
  • Hours: Shifts - day / night 12hr shifts and 16 shifts per month
  • Specific interest in geriatrics will be beneficial. 
  • Driver's licence preferred
