Job Description

The position is primarily responsible for ensuring the accurate and timely distribution of products to customers, while maintaining high standards in the implementation of standard operating procedures to minimize inefficiencies and stock losses. The role also focuses on continuous improvements in distribution efficiency, customer satisfaction, and operational cost control.

Key Duties and Responsibilities Will Include, But Will Not Be Limited To:

  • General management of the logistics functions.
  • General management of outbound functions.
  • General management of Health and Safety, security, and facilities operations.
  • Develop and implement distribution strategies to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Oversee warehouse outbound and transportation operations, ensuring the seamless flow of products to customers.
  • Manage and optimize relationships with third-party logistics providers (3PLs) and transport partners.
  • Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and regulatory requirements related to distribution and logistics.
  • Monitor and analyse key performance indicators (KPIs), delivery performance, and cost metrics, implementing necessary improvements.
  • Collaborate with sales teams to align distribution activities with business objectives.
  • Drive the adoption and implementation of new technologies and automation in distribution processes to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing distribution team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Ensure that operating expenses are kept at a minimum (i.e., overtime, etc.).
  • Lead selection and hiring of new employees; evaluate employee performance; develop and implement action plans for improving employee performance.
  • Ensure that departmental employees receive proper training and skills development.
  • Ensure regular and productive meetings to improve departmental performance.
  • Oversee the preparation and loading of all trucks for delivery of orders in conformance with company procedures and customer instructions.
  • Maintain and control the physical condition of areas of responsibility, security, and facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with company and government policies and regulations (e.g., OHSA).
  • Ensure that response times are achieved and maintained on customer inquiries.
  • Take initiative and action to respond, resolve, and follow up regarding customer service issues with all customers in a timely manner.
  • Actively participate in regular stock takes and cycle counting.
  • Lead efforts in developing and implementing improvement strategies to increase operational efficiency.
  • Ensure the safety and security of all assets, including but not limited to:
  • Follow up and resolve customer queries within a reasonable time frame.
  • Maintain discipline within the warehouse environment.
  • Develop and implement risk management strategies to mitigate distribution-related risks.
  • Enforce all policies and procedures, including safety policies, in an effective and appropriate manner.
  • Manage and promote occupational health and safety practices, implementing and training proper safety procedures and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with other departments to integrate outbound logistics with business systems or processes, such as customer sales, order management, accounting, and shipping.
  • Fully familiarize yourself with all company policies and procedures.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, training, and seminars if needed.
  • Establish periodic goals and objectives, understand how they will be measured, receive feedback from management, and work towards achieving these agreed-upon results within the stated time.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills
  • Grade 12 (Matric Certificate)
  • Relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of a tertiary qualification coupled with work experience. Honours degree preferred.
  • Ability to motivate and develop direct reports.
  • Driver’s license
  • Valid First Aid Certificate
  • OHSA trained.
  • Forklift Certification (Highly beneficial)
  • Computer literate (Microsoft Office Package), SAP, Qwix.
  • Advanced knowledge of distribution analytics and reporting
Experience and Knowledge
  • 5+ Management experience preferable in warehouse operations.
  • 10+ General warehouse experience
  • 5 -7 Experience in conducting disciplinary hearings, coaching, and mentoring of direct reports and performance management of direct reports.
  • 5 – 7 Logistics management experience
  • 5 – 7 Excellent knowledge of administrative systems and procedures
  • 5 – 7 Business acumen and good understanding of business processes and functions
  • 5 – 7 Experience with a comprehensive WMS and WMS driven processes
