About the Role
An established and growing environmental consultancy is seeking a passionate Ecologist with a strong focus on bats to join their expanding team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a particular interest in bat ecology to take a lead in designing and delivering projects involving bat surveys, mitigation, and licensing.

You’ll work on a diverse range of projects across infrastructure, renewable energy, and conservation sectors, collaborating with a multi-skilled and supportive team of ecologists, ornithologists, and environmental planners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support bat surveys including emergence/re-entry, transects, and static detector deployment.
  • Prepare and review ecological reports including PEAs, EcIAs, and HRA reports, with a bat-specialist lens.
  • Licence applications and mitigation plans for bat species.
  • Analyse bat data using specialist software (e.g., Analook, Kaleidoscope, BatExplorer).
  • Support junior team members and contribute to internal bat training and best practice.
  • Liaise with clients, stakeholders, and statutory bodies to guide projects through planning and licensing stages.
  • Input into project management, field scheduling, and fee proposals.

About You
You’ll be a proactive, technically-strong ecologist with a demonstrable interest and skillset in bat ecology. You’re comfortable working independently and as part of a team, and keen to be part of a consultancy that genuinely values innovation, integrity, and ecology-led decision-making.

Essential:

  • Relevant degree in Ecology or related subject.
  • At least 2 years of UK-based consultancy experience.
  • Strong bat identification skills and experience leading bat surveys.
  • Experience analysing bat data using specialist software.
  • Excellent written communication and report writing skills.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for fieldwork.

Desirable:

  • NE or SNH Bat Survey Licence (Level 2 or above).
  • Experience in mitigation design and licensing for bat species.
  • Knowledge of wider ecological survey techniques.
  • Membership of CIEEM or working towards it.

Why Join?

  • Collaborative, forward-thinking, and genuinely ecology-first culture
  • Exciting range of projects including renewables, infrastructure, and conservation
  • Generous TOIL system and flexible hybrid working
  • Ongoing CPD and support toward chartership/licensing
  • £1,600 placement bonus via Talent Torch
