Lead ecological solutions that support nature and infrastructure in harmony.
Our client is a respected, forward-thinking environmental consultancy known for its passion for biodiversity and commitment to delivering sustainable outcomes across infrastructure, planning, and development. With a multi-disciplinary team and a thriving ecology unit, they are trusted partners on major national infrastructure schemes and localised projects alike.
Their approach is both scientific and pragmatic—combining deep ecological expertise with a clear understanding of planning policy, client needs, and real-world constraints.
As the business continues to grow, they’re looking for a Principal Ecologist to join their team and take a leadership role in delivering key projects across Scotland and beyond.
This is a senior leadership opportunity within a dynamic and technically skilled ecology team. You'll oversee a wide range of field surveys and ecological assessments, lead on strategic project delivery, and provide expert-level input on planning, mitigation, and biodiversity net gain.
Whether guiding infrastructure projects through the consenting process or mentoring early-career ecologists, you’ll be at the heart of delivering meaningful environmental outcomes.
Lead and oversee Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), and Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRAs).
Develop and manage Biodiversity Net Gain strategies and mitigation plans.
Provide ecological input into planning applications, including for Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs).
Support clients through EIA and planning processes, offering strategic ecological advice.
Manage and mentor junior ecologists, including line management responsibilities.
Coordinate fieldwork programs and ensure quality assurance of reporting.
Contribute to fee proposals, tenders, and business development activities.
Build and maintain relationships with clients, statutory bodies, and planning authorities.
Minimum 5+ years’ experience in a consultancy environment.
Strong technical ecological expertise, particularly in UK protected species and habitats.
Full Member of CIEEM (essential).
Protected species licences (desirable).
Excellent project management and client communication skills.
Experience managing teams and mentoring staff.
Track record of producing clear, robust reports for planning.
A collaborative mindset and commitment to continual learning.
Salary from £45,000 – £55,000+ depending on experience
Flexible hybrid working options from Glasgow or Perth offices
Supportive, inclusive team culture with a passion for nature
Continued professional development (CPD) and career progression
A diverse portfolio of nationally significant and local projects
Real influence in the growth of an ambitious ecological practice
