The Role
As a Senior Ecologist (Ornithology), you’ll be at the forefront of leading ornithological projects, providing specialist advice, and working alongside a multidisciplinary team including Hydrology, Construction & Aquatics experts.
You’ll scope, design, and lead ornithological surveys, contributing valuable expertise to Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), and Habitats Regulations Assessments (HRA).
If you’re passionate about mentoring the next generation of ecologists, you’ll also have the chance to line manage and develop graduates and consultants.
What You’ll Do
- Lead ornithology projects, providing expert advice to colleagues and clients.
- Design and conduct ornithological surveys, applying best-practice methodologies.
- Produce high-quality technical reports, including EcIAs, EIAs, HRA, and biodiversity assessments.
- Engage with clients, subcontractors, and interdisciplinary teams to drive project success.
- Mentor and support junior team members, fostering a culture of learning and innovation.
- Ensure all work aligns with CIEEM, IEMA, CIWEM, and IFM professional standards.
What We’re Looking For
- Degree or Master’s in Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field.
- CIEEM Membership, ideally working towards Chartership.
- Excellent bird identification skills and strong experience in ornithological survey techniques (e.g., vantage point surveys, moorland breeding birds, raptors).
- Comprehensive understanding of UK bird species, conservation status, and environmental legislation.
- Strong report writing skills with experience in fee proposals and business development.
- Excellent organisational and project management abilities.
- Full, clean UK driving licence.
Desirable: CSCS/EMSS Safety Passport, LANTRA 4x4 training, Emergency Outdoor First Aid.
