Principal R&D Engineer – Galway, Ireland

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the design, development, and troubleshooting of innovative medical devices throughout the R&D lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with physicians to translate clinical needs into product requirements and design concepts.
  • Drive technical innovation and provide leadership across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Identify and mitigate technological risks during product development.
  • Apply deep knowledge of anatomy, physiology, materials science, and engineering principles to develop effective medical device designs.
  • Build strong working relationships with internal teams and external suppliers, both locally and globally.
  • Take projects from early concept through to commercialization, contributing across technical, process, and product domains.
  • Solve complex engineering challenges related to existing products and support ongoing portfolio enhancements.
  • Contribute to the creation and protection of intellectual property.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers, sharing expertise and providing direction.
  • Engage with cross-site technical forums to foster knowledge sharing and community building.
  • Help define and implement strategic technical goals aligned with overall business strategy.
  • Design and conduct studies to address specific scientific and engineering questions in your area of expertise.

What We’re Looking For

  • Level 8 degree in Engineering or a related field with a minimum of 7 years’ relevant experience, or a PhD with at least 5 years’ experience. Additional qualifications are a plus.
  • A dynamic, proactive team player who thrives in cross-functional environments.
  • A highly experienced engineer with a proven track record in medical device development, innovation, and technical leadership.
  • Passion for engineering—driven by curiosity and a deep understanding of how things work.
  • A strategic thinker and influencer who can lead major technical initiatives.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following: component/system design, medical-grade materials (polymers/metals), sterilization processes, test method development, Design for Six Sigma, CAD (SolidWorks preferred), pre-clinical evaluation, clinical collaboration, anatomical and physiological knowledge, system requirements, design controls, and ISO standards for medical devices.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to clearly articulate complex concepts.
