Job Description

Technical Project Manager – West Midlands – Up to £50,000 + Benefits

Our client is a market-leading engineering business at the forefront of the rail sector, providing specialist asset, engineering and technical solutions across the UK and Europe.

The business is going through an exciting period of development, with continued investment in new products, technology and improved ways of working. As part of this growth, they are looking to strengthen their project capability with an experienced Project Manager who can bring structure, pace and fresh thinking to the delivery of complex engineering projects.

The Opportunity & Role

As Project Manager, you will take ownership of a varied portfolio of technical engineering projects covering new product introduction, new-build, retrofit, conversions and engineering change.

You will manage projects on a cradle-to-grave basis, while also taking ownership of existing projects at different stages of their lifecycle. Working closely with engineering teams, customers and suppliers, you will be responsible for ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget and to the required quality and technical standards.

This is more than a project coordination role. The business is looking for a self-starter who wants to make a genuine difference, bringing a continuous-improvement mindset and helping introduce greater pace and structure to project delivery.

Rail experience is not essential, and the opportunity could suit an experienced Project Manager from automotive, aerospace, defence, rolling stock or another engineered product/manufacturing environment. The formal role also covers certification, engineering change, project cost control and cross-functional collaboration.

Working Model & Location

  • Hybrid working
  • 3 days onsite / 2 days remote
  • UK travel as and when required

Essential Criteria

  • Circa 5+ years' Project Management experience within a technical or engineering environment
  • Proven ownership of projects from concept and design through to implementation, delivery and close-out
  • Experience managing engineered products, product development or technical engineering projects
  • Comfortable managing multiple concurrent projects at varying stages of the lifecycle
  • Strong knowledge of project disciplines including scope, planning, milestones, risk, change, budgets and governance
  • Experience managing suppliers, customers and internal technical stakeholders
  • Commercially aware with experience of project cost and budget control
  • Able to challenge constructively and contribute to continuous improvement
  • Proactive, self-reliant and comfortable taking ownership in a fast-moving environment
  • APM, PRINCE2, APQP/PPAP or equivalent project methodology exposure advantageous but not essential.
  • Rail experience advantageous but not essential
