Technician – Traction Motors

Location: Nottingham

Hours: Monday – Thursday: 07:30 – 16:00 Friday: 06:30 – 15:00

Salary: £45,000 per annum + benefits Overtime: x1.5 after 8 hours per day x1.5 Saturdays x2 Sundays

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Traction Motor Technician to join our specialist rail engineering team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the inspection, overhaul, rewinding, repair, assembly and testing of traction motors used on Class 66 locomotives. You will work within a busy workshop environment, ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.

This role would suit an electrically biased technician with experience working on traction motors, rotating electrical equipment, generators, motors, or similar heavy industrial machinery. Candidates from rail, marine, power generation, mining, manufacturing, or heavy engineering backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

• Dismantle, inspect, overhaul, rewind, repair, reassemble and test traction motors.
• Diagnose electrical and mechanical faults and determine appropriate repair solutions.
• Carry out incoming inspections to assess condition, serviceability and repair requirements.
• Complete detailed inspection and test reports, including photographic evidence where required.
• Repair and prepare reusable components to required specifications and standards.
• Conduct electrical and mechanical testing throughout the overhaul process.
• Ensure all work is completed in accordance with customer specifications, quality requirements and industry standards.
• Accurately complete job documentation, timesheets and material requisitions.
• Identify and report product defects, failures and warranty issues.
• Support mechanical fitting activities associated with rotating electrical equipment.
• Maintain a safe, clean and organised working environment.
• Adhere to all health, safety, environmental and quality procedures.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential

• Recognised apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Machine Repair/Rewinds, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
• Proven experience working on traction motors, electric motors, generators, alternators, or other rotating electrical equipment.
• Experience dismantling, repairing, assembling, rewinding and testing electrical machinery.
• Experience working within a rail, industrial, manufacturing, marine, power generation, mining or heavy engineering environment.
• Good understanding of workshop health and safety requirements.

Desirable

• Experience working on Class 66 locomotives or freight rolling stock.
• Experience with DC traction motors and associated equipment.
• Previous experience within a locomotive maintenance, overhaul or component repair facility.
• Understanding of rail industry quality and engineering standards.
