The Datacenter Engineering Principal Electrical Engineer/Substation Design Manager will be part of the client's internal team responsible for developing industry-leading datacenter designs. The successful candidate will be a professional electrical engineer with extensive experience in datacenter electrical engineering, design, construction, and operations, with a specific focus on managing substation design for datacenters. The candidate will manage, review, and coordinate the delivery of complex datacenter electrical systems, power distribution systems, and backup power systems. This individual will be responsible for managing external consultants to ensure compliance with the company's standards. The candidate will also be responsible for the technical review and analysis of datacenters to ensuring they meet the client's requirements.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Lead and direct consultants in the design and coordination of electrical systems, focusing on substations, power, and overall electrical topology for datacenter builds.
- Manage electrical workgroups involving representatives from consulting firms and key stakeholders within the company.
- Oversee all power system designs related to substations during design stages, equipment procurement, bidding, manufacturing, delivery, and installation on-site.
- Identify and resolve issues raised by construction teams and various stakeholders.
- Collaborate closely with procurement teams, manufacturers, and global and local engineering teams to deliver the required electrical solutions for each project.
- Develop specifications and design details, outlining the sequence of operations for electrical systems, including overall drawings and specifications for substation topology.
- Conduct technical reviews and analyses of leased and colocation datacenter spaces from external providers for compliance with the client's requirements.
- Lead technical reviews with utility providers to complete reliability studies and support the Energy team with feasibility studies.
- Support the Energy team with energy applications by providing requirements for power demand, resilience, and physical diversity.
- Validate electrical infrastructure arrangements, substation footprints, and identify power availability risks during site due diligence and test fit with the Site Selection team.
- Assist partner teams in reviewing the electrical infrastructure upgrading scope to enhance site utilization.
- Assist in the commissioning process to validate performance, quality, and reliability.
Qualifications and Experience
- The ideal candidate will be an Electrical Professional Engineer with expertise in datacenter electrical power engineering and substation design management.
- Team player capable of working within a multi-disciplined engineering team to design datacenters globally and skilled in managing multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Knowledgeable in power generation and transmission topologies.
- Comprehensive understanding of electrical distribution system design and monitoring requirements for mission-critical applications, along with the sequence of operations and monitoring of all datacenter electrical control systems.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
- Professional Engineer certification in Electrical Engineering.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, and high-quality standards.
- Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, and automatic/static transfer switches.
- Proficient in relays, protection schemes, high-voltage distribution systems, power and distribution transformers, earthing, and switching.
- Excellent knowledge of building codes and regulations.
- Proficiency in MS Office for preparing and presenting reports.
Experience Required:
- Registered Professional Engineer in Electrical Engineering.
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in consulting engineering, with at least 5 years as a lead engineer.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of large-scale and complex electrical engineering systems (datacenters and microelectronics are relevant industries).
- Proven ability to lead a team of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes related to large datacenter environments.
- Experience in designing, operating, and commissioning electrical distribution systems, from high voltage (HV) to branch circuits.
- Proficiency in power system analysis and engineering software packages.
- Extensive knowledge of substation systems related to datacenter environments.
- Ability to perform complex business case analyses to justify technical decisions.
